Your shading in this is very well done. I love the contrast of white and black and the shades show well on this work. I especially love your finer and lighter strokes.

Thank you. They are sometimes hard to see; it depends on your monitor. :D

Not bad, i would tell you to define more the outer edges of objects and characters. I think it would give it more depth.

this is very nice! the patterns along with the background give it an abstract feel, and the character Lucien looks great too, the shading combined with his design make him look like A charming swindler (of course I probably interpreted that completely wrong though XD)

Lucien would find that comment very funny.

Usually, he's either impassive or biting your head off with caustic barbs.  Nobles and barons are scared of him.

However, when travelling incognito, he does persuade people do do things they wouldn't otherwise do. Like eating in a $300 per meal restaurant for a backpacker's birthday even if he had just met them yesterday (and using tax money to pay for them...he is the king, after all, and if he likes you, he'll splurge on you), talking himself into the back room of a fashion show to try on or steal some designs, or getting fellow backpackers careening down a mountainside waterfall on a board despite the No Trespassing! and Danger! signs.  When he runs into trouble, he charms the pants off the cops while hairsplitting the law to his advantage (well, he IS the law, so he knows it backwards and upside down).

So you're not completely wrong. His court can never wait long enough for him to return and things being normal again, even though he's growling at them all the time.

Thanks for the fave!

I really like the details in the eagle's feathers!
imo, you could have spent a little more time on the background which looks a bit like you ran out of time ;)

I like the kind of surreal feel you have going on in the background. :3 His character has some really nice details on it as well.

I agree with the crit you've already received about his face - I think a lot of it has to do with the sharp angle from his far eye down to his chin, it chops off the structure of the jaw a bit. Building out the jaw slightly and then tweaking the eyes as suggested previously would probably fix it. =]

Now, the eagle...My background is with technical art and animal studies so I definitely have a bias towards realism, but I'd like to see the anatomy reworked a bit. As it is now, it basically has no body - the legs come out very close to the neck. Pushing the legs back a bit or doing some foreshortening (to indicate the body is behind) could help.

Overall, nice work! Good luck in the contest!

I did tweak the eye a bit...but can't do more now, the contest is closed. The guy I referenced has this sharp angle, but I must have done it too much.

I tried to do foreshortening to indicate the body is behind, but I'm no good at foreshortening, even on humans. I'll just have to practice drawing more birds.

Yeah, I tried for a surreal feel for the background.

Thank you for the crit, and it's nice to get one from one who knows animals. :D

My pleasure! I could be wrong about the jaw, humans have a huge variety of facial features so I usually rely on "average".

Yeah, foreshortening is a really tricky subject, a lot of my prework in sketching goes into re-doing foreshortenings.

The emphasis should be on Lucien. Immediately, what the eye is drawn to is the bird perching on his shoulder, which would be fine if this was a contest about birds. I would move him slightly more center, with small details (like the arch of the birds wings) redirecting the eye to him and his outfit.
