There are some marks on Paltern's chest that aren't supposed to be there.
Colour version of this:
Only the dominant or more feckless spouse wears the marriage bracelets.
King Paltern didn't want to marry this crazy alien woman, who came crashing into his life like a supernova. His planet was in need of interplanetary protection, and she was it. Better than an army, his father said. So marry her Paltern did.
He wants heirs, she doesn't. She doesn't want him to sire heirs with the concubines, either.
Jane didn't want to marry this hot-headed upstart human, but he needed her help to protect his planet. She's a sucker for those in a spot of bother, so agreed to the bond she did. All she needed to do was protect his planet. No problem. Except the marriage bracelets had put her in temporal hell.
Nor did she count on him being so demanding. She'd given him three kids already. It's not her fault the first nicked off to another planet (well, OK, maybe it was), the second died in an explosion(OK, well, that was written in the timelines, not her fault her boy had to die, it's not she liked it, you know), and the third she miscarried. Well, OK, she created a storm while carrying the third, but she couldn't help that; there was another planet in a spot of bother.
He could divorce her, but her protection would no longer be legit. She doesn't want it, either; she likes the man. Cosmos knows why; he's always yelling at her about some domestic matter she has no clue about.
